Consumer trends this Christmas
Here is how kiwis will be shopping this Christmas
You may have noticed that tourism is beginning to pick up in your area and perhaps more customers are beginning to browse your shop to get inspiration for Christmas gifts.
It is also the season for many locals to begin to update their wardrobes, get their backyard ready for entertaining and begin to engage in more social spending activities outside the home. December is right around the corner and many consumers are already getting their holiday shopping out of the way now. But how are Kiwi consumers planning on shopping this Christmas?
Growth in online spend has continued to increase over the last several years. With the increase of marketplaces and new e-tailers, along with bricks and mortar retailers selling online, consumers have a lot of choice when it comes to buying online. That creates a really competitive market for New Zealand retailers who are all competing for the same discretionary spending.
Nearly 60 per cent of Kiwi consumers plan on doing their Christmas shopping online this year, so it is important that retailers are able to attract customers to their sites. Consumers are already expecting good deals on great products, expect their shopping to be delivered to them for free and will do a significant amount of online shopping from their mobile devices. It is worth taking the time over the next few weeks to make sure that your digital presence is reaching the right people, ensure that you have some promotional plans in place and consider ways to make the online shopping experience for your customers as convenient as possible.
Don't forget, if you need some advice, Retail NZ is always here to help.

The Consumer Guarantees Act - have you got it right?
The Consumer Guarantees Act can be vague at times, meaning that issues often must be dealt with on a case by case basis. This legislation is designed to protect the consumer when there is an issue with a product or service they have purchased, but it's important you understand your rights as well.
Our guide on the Consumer Guarantees Act will help you understand the law and provide you with some examples to help guide you when dealing with customer issues. It's FREE for Retail NZ members (or $29 plus GST for non-members).
